Yelman hat trick sends Toll Gate to championship

Posted

The Toll Gate Lady Titans are headed to the Girls Division III Soccer Championship after defeating the Classical Purple 4-3 in thrilling fashion on Monday night during the semifinal round at Johnston Senior High School.

Shinyu Vega, a Toll Gate freshman midfielder, scored the game-winning goal just before the clock struck stoppage time.

“Shinyu struggled a little bit this year and I know how much talent she has from the outside,” Lady Titans head coach Robert Enright said. “She’s got a phenomenal shot from the outside and it just hasn’t been here. And today she came to play. She got her opportunity and she did something with it. So, she’s been struggling and I’m proud of her.”

Prior to that, Toll Gate had relinquished a 3-0 lead after Tovianna Robinson, Carolyn Myrusc, and Anaya Stephens each scored goals, respectively. Stephens’ goal came during the 76th minute.

“We don’t do anything easy,” Enright joked. “At Toll Gate, we just try to do everything hard.”

“I told them at the half, this team was going to come storming back,” Enright said. “They’ve been on a roll and I told them ‘listen, they’re not going to sit down. They’re going to give it to us,’ and they did. And my team held their composure and settled down and just fought to the end.”

Kara Yelman, a senior forward, topped the Lady Titans attack with a hat trick.

“Right before she scored the first goal, I said ‘listen, you’ve been due all year for this type of game and she just performed today,” Enright said. “She came to play. I’m proud of her. She’s been missing a ton of shots this year. Over the top, wide, and today she was just spot-on.”

Morgan Caianiello, a senior midfielder, dished out all four of Toll Gate’s assists.

“Morgan put every ball where it needed to be for the scorers to score,” Enright said. “So, she did her job.”

Alanna Pereira, Toll Gate’s sophomore goalkeeper made 13 saves in the game.

“She’s been our goalie all year,” Enright said. “She’s been amazing. She gets down on herself, but her teammates carry her, and I wouldn’t want anybody else in the net. She’s performed all year round.”

Next, the D-III-A top-seeded Lady Titans will face off against the D-III-B top-seeded Bulldogs when Toll Gate meets Westerly in the D-III Championship match on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Cranston Stadium.
