Mayor Frank Picozzi credits the quick action of one of the city’s sanitation trucks – a rear packer used to collect furniture and other heavy trash – with reducing the injuries if not saving the lives of those in a car that slammed into the truck Monday shortly after 5 p.m. in Conimicut Village. As the truck driver saw the car cross into his lane and head directly for the truck, he swerved, meaning the car hit the truck broadside. Picozzi said the force broke the axel. A full report was not available Monday, however Captain Hart of the traffic division said the driver and car passenger as well as the truck driver were taken to Kent Hospital with minor injuries. Hart said there was talk that the car driver had “dozed off.” Condition of the car was such that it appeared miraculous that anyone survived. “It looks worse than it really was,” said Hart.
