Woodridge Elementary School celebrated Reading Week last week, with the school inviting guest readers from local firefighters to representatives of the Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to share what they do.
The week began with a visit from a librarian from the Cranston Library Central Branch connecting with the school’s theme of “Level Up Reading Week” and emphasizing the importance of using local libraries.
As part of that theme, Woodridge Principal Marisa Jackson said they had a spirit week with days like Twin Day, Cranston Kindness Day and Level Up Friendship Day.
The week concluded on Friday with an appearance by award-winning storyteller Valerie Tutson, who shared a couple of stories with children from kindergarten through second grade, and from grades 3 through 5.
Later in the afternoon, That Falcon Band from Cranston High School West, along with some Falconettes and Westernettes, entertained students. A Woodridge student, fifth-grader Evan Ruppert, also joined the band, carrying the American flag, and proceeded onto the pavement in front of the school with them, according to Jackson.
“Reading week was so much fun,” Jackson said. “It was an engaging week in talking about and hearing from guest readers about the importance of literacy in our community.”
