Lemonade fundraiser helps secure blankets for RIers in needs

When Cranston High School East graduate Emily Sanita heard from Shawn O’Rourke at the Providence Rescue Mission that there were people who were homeless and freezing in the winter, she took action.

“Last year, I was able to donate over 200 blankets because there wasn’t a lot of room in the homeless shelters. This year, my goal is 1,000 blankets,” she said.

Emily, 19, grew up and lives in the Edgewood area of Cranston. Emily was adopted at a very young age and is originally from Guatemala.

“I have learning disabilities and I’m part of the Cranston transition program,” she said.

Emily currently works at the Cranston Senior Enrichment Center for the summer.

On Friday, July 23, Emily teamed up with Newport Lemonade and the Thirsty Beaver Cranston to host a fundraiser to raise money for blankets.

“It was a great turnout. She raised over $1,000 for blankets for the homeless. I look forward to helping her with the blanket drive soon,” said Justin Erickson, co-owner of Newport Lemonade and the Thirsty Beaver.

Emily had lots of support from the Cranston community, but there were two extra special people in attendance that night.

“Barbara Ann Fenton-Fung and [former] Mayor [Allan] Fung were a big help, as well getting people there. I’ve known them the longest – BA taught me how to walk at the age of 3,” Emily said.

The weather that night was perfect for enjoying some lemonade and catching up with friends. Emily wanted to make sure she sent special thanks to those who supported her.

“The lemonade fundraiser at Cranston Thirsty Beaver was great. Thank you everyone who came and donated and supported my cause. I want to say a special thank you to Justin Erickson of Newport Lemonade, Jason Andoscia, Steven Paiva, Councilman Ed Brady, Councilwoman Nicole Renzulli and Councilman Matt Reilly,” she said.

As far as planning more events, Emily simply said to stay tuned.
