What it might look this morning

Rain earlier this week postponed the “dieting” of Main Avenue from Greenwich Avenue to the Greenwood Bridge with the reduction from four to two travel lanes. Charles St. Martin, spokesman for the Rhode Island Department of Transportation said Wednesday that the road’s existing lines would be removed that night and new ones painted by this morning. Narrow for four lanes and with utility poles close to the road, Main Avenue has been the site of several fatal and multiple injury accidents. Warwick Police favor the change although since the route is heavily traveled at some time during the day, concerns have been raised over delays and congestion. Mayor Frank Picozzi said Tuesday there is “no margin for error” on the four-lane road and making it two lanes is “a trade off for safety…it could cost a few minutes and it saves lives.” The existing four lanes will be kept at both ends of the stretch between the Greenwood Bridge and Greenwich Avenue, allowing for traffic to double up at the intersections. If congestion becomes a significant problem, Picozzi said the four lanes could be easily restored. (Simulated photo courtesy of the RIDOT)
