The Cranston West football team continued its ascent up the Division II standings by topping visiting Mt. Pleasant 20-16 last Friday night.
The Kilties got off to a fast start by blocking a West punt, recovering the ball then seeing its offense rush for a touchdown to take a quick 8-0 lead.
The Falcons would buckle down the rest of the way and work its way to a 20-16 lead in the fourth quarter. Mt. Pleasant would have the ball late in the fourth with an opportunity to take the lead, but West’s Marcus Chung would haul in an interception at the 2-yard line to close out the win.
“Very happy. We put together a full game again, faced some adversity early on with the blocked punt and fell behind 8-0. We got into a rhythm from that point and it was a back and forth game. Marcus Chung came up with a big interception in the fourth and we were able to methodically take it down the field and we didn’t have to give them the ball back,” said West head coach Tom Milewski.
West quarterback Kelan Cornell went 5-for-12 and tossed touchdown passes to Chung and Hudson Carvalho, while Chung also rushed for a score. Dimitri LeBlanc also rushed for 79 yards in the win.
West has emerged as a top contender in the Division II ranks with wins over East Providence, Cumberland and Mt. Pleasant. Health and chemistry have helped the Falcons shake off the slow start this fall and climb back into the playoff picture, where they secured at least the second seed with last week’s win.
“As a team, we are really starting to gel and come together. The offensive line has really stepped up, Marcus has been our guy since the start of the season, Dimitri and Hudson have stepped up on offense. On defense, Dom Schiavulli and Jack Majcher, Aidan Merhi, we really have started to come together and we’re getting healthy. To finally have everyone back and to be playing well at this point in the season, it’s good,” Milewski said.
Milewski was also happy to see his team get wins against other top tier teams.
“It’s awesome. We grinded it out against two very tough teams in Cumberland and Mt. Pleasant. This was a great win for us because we were able to impose our will and do what we wanted. This should give us some confidence going into the playoffs knowing that we can do those things,” said Milewski.
West improved its league record to 4-1 and will close out the regular season against East Greenwich this Friday. With a win and a St. Ray’s loss, the Falcons would earn the top seed and home field advantage throughout the playoffs.
“We talked about Mt. Pleasant being a big game. It was our senior night and could determine if we get a home game. We used that as motivation, but we are focused on the next game and not letting anyone else control our destiny,” said Milewski, who is excited to see West earn a home playoff game for the first time since returning to its home field on campus. “To play a (playoff) game at Cranston West, it would be an incredible atmosphere for the kids, the players, the whole community.”
