The No. 7 Cranston West softball team continues to impress in the Division I playoffs as it earned a trip to the winners bracket semifinals.

The Falcons pulled off consecutive upsets over St. Mary Academy-Bay View and St. Ray’s to advance to the semis with a shot at a state championship appearance on the line.

West first beat the host Bengals in the preliminary round last week by a score of 5-2. Paige Cote pitched four innings for the Falcons, allowing just one earned run on two hits while striking out nine batters. Gab Cunha tossed three innings and allowed just one hit while striking out two batters.

Lyndsey Brandow went 1-for-3 with an RBI in the victory while both Emily and MacKenzie Bessette also added a hit and an RBI each.

Cote was electric in the team’s 4-0 shutout win over the Saints on Monday evening on the road, striking out 15 batters and allowing no runs on just two hits.

“She was dealing, she had her game going, she was on point. We went up 2-0 early and she put us on her back and we rode her the whole game,” said West coach PJ Bessette.

MacKenzie Bessette led the way for West going 3-for-3 with two runs while Emily Bessette went 1-for-3 with a run. Cunha scored the team’s fourth run on a safety squeeze bunt by Alessandra Messina.

“I told the girls that we came in as the seventh seed, so no one is expecting us to win these games. All the pressure is on the other teams. They’re just relaxed and playing loose instead of playing tight. They put the regular season in the rear view mirror and are taking it one game at a time,” said PJ Bessette.

The Falcons were originally set to take on the defending champion Coventry Oakers on Wednesday afternoon in the winners bracket semifinals after they topped Pilgrim on Tuesday. Pilgrim appealed the decision to the league due to a rule infraction, which forced the Pats and Oakers to replay the final three innings on Thursday.

The Falcons will face the winner of the game, likely on Friday afternoon.
