Falcons beat Bolts for first win

By ALEX SPONSELLER The Cranston West football team picked up its first win of the season on Saturday afternoon when it cruised to a 40-14 victory over crosstown rival Cranston East.

“It was our senior day so it was a nice celebration for our seniors and getting in the win column. It shows that they’ve been putting in the work and grinding. They got a win on their day and the underclassmen stepped up and helped them which is good. We’re really starting to gel as a unit and a team,” said West Head Coach Tom Milewski.

The Falcons jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter when Marcus and Myles Chung rushed for scores. Brennan Stetson would later break off a big run in the second quarter to expand the West lead to 21-0 at the break.

Ben Holden later got East on the board on a rushing score in the third quarter to cut into the lead and make it 21-7. The momentum was short-lived however, as Nick Castriotta returned an interception for a touchdown, followed by another score from Myles Chung.

Peyton Ginolfi would add a score for East in the fourth quarter.

“It was good, it was a good day. We also had big plays in special teams that helped us. We played well offensively, defensively, and special teams. Marcus gave us some good punt returns as well which set us up with good field position,” said Milewski, who was also happy to see his offense back to full strength. “We got Brennan Stetson back which gave us a spark and he was able to get back out there with Kris Degaitas and Myles Chung. We finally had our complete offense for the first time this year.”

The Falcons improved to 1-3 on the season and will be hitting the road to face Bishop Hendricken in the finale on Saturday.

Although it has been an up and down spring, Milewski has been happy to see his players get a season and to start building toward the summer and fall.

“It’s been quick, but looking back, it’s good for the kids to be out there. It’s been as good as it could be. The kids worked and the seniors got to have their season. The younger kids got to get some experience so our hope is that the momentum will carry into the quick turnaround when we start the new season,” Milewski said. “It’s been good from a coaching standpoint to see some of the underclassmen and what they can do. What they can handle on the field and in different situations, adversities. Guys have stepped up and they have shown us that they have potential. They will also get some confidence in knowing what to expect.”

East dropped to 0-4 in the loss and will be hosting Central on Friday night for its season finale.
