WCA 10’s beat EG to advance to states

The Warwick Continental American 10-year-old All-Star team topped East Greenwich 9-4 to win the District I Championship on Sunday night.

WCA went 3-0 in its district tournament run and would top EG a second time for the title.

WCA led 1-0 heading into the fifth inning but would break things open by scoring five runs. Dilan Murray, Cole Auclair and Sadie Rotz picked up hits in the fifth while Elijah Costello and Auclair led the way with three hits each.

Colby Fales was lights out on the mound for WCA as he started every game and allowed just two hits across 13  innings while striking out 32 batters. Murray came on in relief on Sunday and closed out the win.

Costello led the team at the plate in the tournament with a .667 batting average. He also caught all 17 innings.

“The kids were super excited to get the win, they’re a great group of kids. Our starting pitcher Colby Fales, he started all three games for us and was pretty special throughout the tournament. He kept us in every game, we weren’t hitting very well in some innings but he was always shutting down the other teams which made it a lot easier,” said WCA manager Jim Louth.

Despite the final score, the two teams were at a standstill in the early innings.

“It was a pitching duel. East Greenwich threw their top pitcher and he hit his pitch limit and we broke it open in the fifth. We knew that Colby was approaching his pitch count so it was important that we tack on a few runs. It got them excited to score those runs heading into the final two innings knowing that Colby was approaching his pitch limit,” said Louth.

As WCA gets ready for the state tournament, the approach will be the same.

“Just keep pitching and coming up with the clutch hits,” Louth said. “The top of our order has been clutch and the bottom has played very well. These kids just play with a lot of energy which is big because you never know what you’re going to get with 10 year olds. We’ve just to keep that energy up, stay focused and make the plays.”

WCA is also thrilled to see its youngest group get the win and looks forward to seeing how the 10’s develop in the future.

“It’s great because you don’t know what you’re going to get at that age group since you haven’t seen them play on that stage. The league is excited for their future, it’s a special group of boys and girls,” Louth said.
