Durand takes 1st at state meet

By ALEX SPONSELLER The Rhode Island high school indoor state championships were held this past weekend at the Providence Career and Technical Academy, and plenty of locals made some noise on the big stage.

La Salle Academy would take first place as a team, followed by Bishop Hendricken in second place. Here is a look at some of the other results from over the weekend:

BOYS

Hendricken’s Brandyn Durand took home first in the 300 dash

Durand would finish second in the 55 dash. Hendricken’s team of Jake Kopech, Durand, Edmund Lok and Nathan Rivas took second in the 800 relay

Lok finished third in the 55 dash for Hendricken while Kopech took third in the 300 dash. Evan McGregor finished third in the 1,000 meter run for the Hawks. Hendricken’s team of Kopech, Xavier Wilkens, Hayden Clare and Anthony Manna finished third in the 1,600 relay.

Alex Morin took fourth in the shot put for the Hawks, while Durand took fifth.

McGregor later took fifth in the 1,500 run for the Hawks, while teammate Troy Silvestri took fifth in the 3,000 run. Hendricken’s Patrick Torres took fifth in the high jump.

Hendricken finished in second place as a unit while Cranston East and West tied for 19th.

Jethro Vargas finished fourth in the long jump for East while West’s Nick Difazio finished fourth in the 300 dash.

GIRLS

Pilgrim freshman Keaney Bayha placed second overall in the 3,000 run and finished fourth in the 1,000 run while Toll Gate’s Alison Pankowicz finished fourth in the 3,000 run.

West finished in fourth place as a team, while Pilgrim took 10th and Toll Gate 16th. East finished 23rd overall.

Cranston West sophomore Ailani Sutherland capped off her impressive winter season by taking home the state championship in the 55 meter dash.

Sutherland later took third in the 300 dash, while West’s team of Lindey Hobin, Quiana Pezza, Praise Mayson and Sutherland took third in the 800 relay. Maddie Alves finished third in the long jump for West.

Alves finished fourth in the 55 dash for the Falcons while Hobin took fourth in the 55 hurdles.
