Warwick PD hosts outdoor movie night Oct. 15

Last year the Warwick Police Department held a ‘drive by’ trick or treat event at the police department’s headquarters as a way to give back to the community in a safe way during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sgt. Matthew Moretti, with the Community Services division called the event “a huge hit,” and said that everyone enjoyed it.

Because of the success he said will continue the trend of a Halloween themed event.

This year they will be hosting an outdoor movie night on Oct. 15 starting at 6:30 p.m. The movie will be Hocus Pocus and will take place at the Bend Street Sports Complex.

“I just wanted to do something a little bit different than what we did last year,” said Moretti. “I was looking for something a little more interacting with the community,”

Throughout the pandemic the community service division of the police department learned to adapt in order to continue to help the community.

One example was the virtual story times for children in the community, which was sponsored by the department.

“We did do everything we possibly could to make sure we still engaged with the community,” said Moretti.

The Central Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce is also helping with the event. Moretti said that the police department has partnered with the Chamber of Commerce for their movie nights in the past and decided to reach out to executive director Lauren Slocum.

Those attending are welcome to wear costumes and are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets.

A rain date has been set for Oct. 22.

In addition to the movie night, the police department will also have their Thanksgiving food drive this November and Christmas toy drive in December.
