Warwick girls co-op falls in semis

The Warwick girls co-op hockey team fell in an epic three-game series against Mount St. Charles in the Division II Semifinals earlier this week.

The Mounties would get a 3-0 shutout win, but Warwick would return the favor in Game 2 by picking up the 1-0 victory.

Mount rebounded in Tuesday night’s Game 3 and would hold off Warwick for a 1-0 decision to punch its ticket to the finals against undefeated Smithfield.

Warwick’s lone goal of the series was scored by freshman Ayla Paley, assisted by Georgia Feld “It was close and the girls were very excited. In the end, in the final game, we were a little immature in taking some of those penalties that we shouldn’t have,” said Warwick coach Don Centracchio.

“We were even. Both goalies are excellent, we have the same type of players on both teams. Two of the three games we outshot them but still came up short.”

Game 2 marked the program’s first playoff win in six years. Warwick got strong goaltending from freshman Flora Meunier, who was filling in for starter Mary Centracchio, who was used as a forward in the series.

“We have two very good freshman goalies and we needed some more skaters up front. It worked for us. Now we know that if we ever need an extra forward or defenseman, we can take Mary out from the net,” Don Centracchio said.

Warwick will now flip the page to 2022-23. The co-op is set to return a large core as its lineup was made up of primarily underclassmen.

The team hopes to use this playoff series as a springboard for an even deeper run next year.

“It is very valuable because you learn from games like (Game 3) that you have to maintain your composure and not take penalties in a game like that, a one-score game. Although the penalties did not hurt us, they did disrupt the flow of the game,” Don Centracchio said.
