Undefeated Warwick co-op set for regionals

By ALEX SPONSELLER The Warwick co-op gymnastics team wrapped up its regular season schedule, going undefeated and ready to defend its region championship this weekend at Dream Big in Cranston.

“The team is feeling pretty good, we have a strong group of sophomores and junior veterans, so they’re doing good heading into this weekend,” said coach Candis Kowalik.

Warwick will be relying on three sophomores in Madison Long, Katie Ignagni and Riley Bromage. The trio burst onto the scene last year as freshmen and have followed it up with an even better 2022 season, helping Warwick remain unbeaten and breaking the school record for points in the process.

“All of them have been pretty consistent contributors for us. We broke our school record again this year and those three absolutely rocked the floor. They put up the best performances that they could have,” said Kowalik.

Warwick is set up well for the future with its impressive crop of sophomores. The team also has multiple juniors that will be returning along with an incoming eighth grade class that is set to make an immediate impact.

Kowalik has been impressed with the consistent influx of new talent as well as the commitment that local gymnasts have made over the past few years.

“Around every two years or so we’ll get a class with about four or five girls that have gymnastics experience and are big contributors. We have had a few girls that were great gymnasts but took a step back to be multi-sport athletes and took a little bit of a step back. You can tell the difference when an athlete trains year round,” said Kowalik.

After this weekend’s regionals will be the state championships at Rhode Island College. Kowalik hopes her team stays focused, puts on its best performance, and has fun as it prepares for the two biggest meets of the season.

“We’re just focusing on ourselves and our goal is solidifying our spot at states,” said Kowalik, who is excited to see such a strong foundation in place moving forward. “It’s definitely awesome, they really enjoy being out there, especially on the good days. The girls have set the bar so high for themselves that there have been times when they’ve gotten frustrated, but we’re working in that and our seniors have done a great job of keeping them relaxed and having fun.”
