Moretti shines in UMD loss

Junior Tahjai Mazyck (Hamden, Conn.) scored 27 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead fourth-seeded UMass Boston to a 69-50 victory over fifth-seeded UMass Dartmouth in opening round play of the 2020 Little East Conference Women’s Basketball Championships Tuesday evening at the Clark Athletic Center.

The host Beacons, who improve to 20-6 overall on the season, advance to Thursday night’s league semifinal round at top-seeded Eastern Connecticut that tips-off at 7 pm. The visiting Corsairs conclude their campaign at 15-11 overall with the setback.

Mazyck and junior Jalani Jackson (Brockton, Mass.) combined for all but 10 of UMass Boston’s 37 first half points, as the Beacons jumped out to a 22-13 first quarter lead and extended that margin to 12 (37-25) at the break. The hosts took control of the contest with 13 unanswered points in a four minute stretch midway through the third stanza, as Mazyck netted 13 of her team’s 24 points in the frame and helped UMass Boston built its lead to as much as 28 points in the final 10 minutes of action.

Jackson added 18 points and three boards in the triumph for the Beacons, as she and Mazyck combined for eight of their squad’s nine three-pointers on the night. Junior Joie Grassi (Plymouth, Mass.) chipped in with six points and 11 rebounds for the hosts, who shot 40 percent (24-60) from the field and held a 44-37 rebounding advantage while converting 17 turnovers into 21 points for the contest.

Sophomore Shaelyn Carreiro (Fall River, Mass.) scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds in the setback for UMass Dartmouth, which received 14 points and six boards from sophomore Jordan Moretti (Johnston). Senior Ashley Brown (New Bedford, Mass.) capped her collegiate career with 12 points, nine caroms and four assists for the Corsairs, who shot 26 percent (16-62) overall and just 2-of-23 from behind the arc on the evening.
