Tori Tomo for affordable Japanese treats

When you think of authentic, inexpensive, ethnic food, downtown Providence doesn’t usually come to mind.

Mike and I left early to get a burger and fries before the PC/UCONN game, only to find hour and a half waits at Trinity Brew Hub and Murphy’s. Kin was closed, so we grabbed the one table left at Tori Tomo, the tiny Japanese restaurant next door at 69 Washington St. (https://www.toritomopvd.com/

Like many restaurants these days, the menu can be accessed by your phone’s app, which Mike immediately went to. Highlights were on the wall’s blackboard. Old school Don asked for a paper menu. (I also asked for a fork with my meal).

Beer, wine, soft drinks, Sake and Sake cocktails were available in a variety flavors at very reasonable prices.

The couple on our left was enjoying rice bowls ($12-$15). Choices are pork, beef, chicken and vegan.

They offer three sandwiches (Chicken Katsu Sando, or Tofu Mushroom Sando at $10 or a braised pork belly at $12).

We both chose the popular Ramen Bowl.

I enjoyed the Miso Ramen ($15) in a tasty pork miso broth, loaded with tender pork belly, spinach, beansprout and shitake mushroom, and topped with a 1/2 soft boiled egg. The broth was hot and delicious, perfect for a chilly, rainy night.

For the same price, Mike had an Ichiraku ramen bowl, which looked pretty much the same as mine, accept for something called narutomaki floating in it.

Service was friendly, fast, and accommodating.

We’ll be back. And I’ll bring Joyce.
