Areson leads Titans to playoff win

By ALEX SPONSELLER The No. 3 Toll Gate girls basketball team rolled past visiting Burrillville 50-29 in the Division III Quarterfinals on Monday night.

Sophomore standout Adeline Areson had a monster performance for the Lady Titans. Recording 33 points, with 17 of them coming from the foul line. Bri Simono continued to impress this season, adding eight points in the victory.

The Titans were in control from start to finish and held the visiting Broncos without a point until the second quarter. Areson and the Titans would catch fire in the second half and put the game out of reach.

“(Areson) had an unbelievable game. She was dominant. She controlled the ball, hit her foul shots. She was controlling the offense which was great to see from a sophomore. It’s unbelievable to see her with that mentality and to see her grow so quick. She has grown immensely this season,” said Toll Gate coach Owen Paquet.

The Broncos handed Toll Gate one of its only two losses on the year earlier in the campaign. Paquet felt that a cleaner offensive performance is what led to the team’s success this time around.

“We were a little too fast on offense the last time we played Burrillville. This time, we had a little bit more control, saw the floor a little bit better. That made all the difference in the world,” Paquet said.

The Titans traveled north to take on No. 2 North Smithfield on Wednesday night. The results were not available at press time.

North Smithfield dealt Toll Gate its other loss on the season, and earned the higher seed due to that tie-breaking decision. The Titans have used that loss as fuel heading into the matchup.

“We had two losses this year, Burrillville being the first and North Smithfield being the second. We’re riding that motivation train of, ‘Let’s beat the two teams that beat us.’ It has given us a little bit more focus at practice to see what we’re made out of. The momentum that we’re riding right now is pretty strong,” said Paquet. “We have a young team, but they are playoff minded. We lost to Woonsocket by two points last year and we don’t want to go home again that quick. We’re ready to battle as a team.”
