Titans shut out BVP, headed to title game

The Toll Gate boys soccer team shut out Blackstone Valley Prep 2-0 in the Division IV Semifinals on Tuesday evening to punch its ticket to this Sunday’s state championship game against top-seeded Scituate, who beat Woonsocket 3-1.

Brodie Marinelli would score the Titans’ first goal late in the first period to put Toll Gate up 1-0. BVP’s defense would hang tough and give its offense chances to knot the score throughout the second half, but Toll Gate’s leading scorer Aiden Preuit would find the back of the net with two minutes remaining to put the game away and send the Titans to the championship.

The Titans finished the regular season with a 10-0-3 record which would earn them second place in the division. Toll Gate and BVP played each other a couple weeks back and played to a tie.

“Blackstone Valley Prep is very solid defensively. (BVP’s Alejandro Arias) defended well all night and was (a tough matchup). He had the speed to keep up with Aiden, who is our top offensive threat. That was a good matchup for them, but the constant pressure and the ball movement eventually broke them down and we were able to score a couple goals,” said Toll Gate coach Jason Melo. “As a coach, I was very happy with their performance, but I wish that our finishing was a little more clinical. I can’t complain about anything with their performance, though. They played incredible from the start to the very end. I was very happy with that performance.”

Next up for the Titans is No. 1 Scituate, who the Titans went 1-0-1 against in the regular season. The Spartans beat every other team on its schedule and Melo expects another close matchup this time around.

“That is our toughest matchup of this year. They’re a very good team, they’re well-coached and have speed everywhere. That poses a threat to us,” said Melo.

Although there is one game left, the Titans are thrilled to be back in the championship mix after a couple of down seasons.

“The kids couldn’t be happier, they’re ecstatic to have an opportunity to play in the finals and hopefully win a championship. This means everything to them, means everything to the seniors. They got to play in a championship as freshmen, but it has been awhile that they have been able to look forward to something like this,” said Melo. “Especially with the girls team being in the finals as well, the school is buzzing.”
