That’s entertaiment: Twenty years ago


Theatre-by-the-Sea closed its summer season with “Dames at Sea,” which featured Rhode Islander Jena Barrette.
Cape Bretton fiddler Natalie MacMaster headlined the annual Rhythm and Roots Festival at Ninigret Park.
The Farrelly Brothers and Michael Corrente joined forces to produce “Outside Providence,” starring Alec Baldwin and featuring many Rhode Island actors, including Trinity’s George Martin, Richard Jenkins, Amy Von Nostrand and Timothy Crowe.
Johnny Depp and Charlize Theron starred in The Astronaut’s Wife. Kevin Costner starred in a good baseball movie, For Love of the Game.
Cranston native Carol Sloane joined John Worsley and his all-star swing band for a concert at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet.
After over 20 years of covering the Warwick Musical Theatre, I wrote my last review, which included Alabama, Roger Whittaker, Johnny Mathis and the great Vince Gill, who performed until way after midnight at the Tent’s final concert. It was a beautiful but sad evening.
I reviewed Fire and Ice at Providence Place Mall, where you picked out your ingredients and chefs cooked it before your eyes.
Trinity Rep opened its season with director Amanda Dehnert’s unique interpretation of “Othello.”
David Kane’s “Father Misgivings” was at the Odeum in East Greenwich.
Newgate Theatre presented “Six Degrees of Separation,” directed by Brian Lang.
Ocean State Light Opera gave us a stunning “La Boheme,” with Maria Spagna as Mimi.

40 Tears Ago

Estelle Parsons starred in “Miss Margarida’s Way” at Rhode Island College’s Performing Arts Series.
Rosemarie, Rosemary Clooney, Helen O’Connell and Margaret Whiting put on quite a show at the Warwick Musical Theatre. Liberace wowed the crowd when he showed a woman his rings. “See those?” he said. “You paid for them.” His opening act was a young Andrea McArdle, star of “Annie.”
Robert Palmer was at the Vets. James Montgomery was at the Palace in West Warwick. The Police were at Rhode Island College.
Life of Brian was the hot movie of the year.
The Doobie Brothers and The Eagles were at the Providence Civic Center.
