It’s usually law enforcement officers who have summoned citizens to places like the Johnston Police Department headquarters.
However, the tables were turned last Wednesday when Italo-American Club of Rhode Island President George Lazzareschi Jr. and Ex-Officio Anthony “Nappy” Napolitano arrived at the JPD facility and requested the outdoor presence of Chief Richard S. Tamburini, who officially retired Monday after an illustrious and storied career with the JPD and Providence Police that spanned nearly six decades.
“We’re here to honor our friend and fellow club member,” Lazzareschi, who is the superintendent of public safety in Providence and lives in Johnston, offered with his trademark smile written all across his face. “Richard is – and has been – a great friend, a great citizen and a great, great cop and long-time member at the club. We’ll have a special presentation at a later date but for now we want to wish him well on his retirement after 57 years in law enforcement.”
Napolitano, meanwhile, exchanged stories and shared some of the many memories the two have enjoyed during their long-time and unique friendship that date back to when Tamburini was the Deputy Chief in Providence.
“Now you can join me in my retirement,” Nappy said. “We’ll have lunch – even dinner – at the club; just remember, I’m not a golfer.”
Tamburini is an avid golfer who, among his many accomplishments, has been one of the driving forces behind the unmatched success of the Rhode Island Police Chiefs Association Golf Tournament that annually raises money for college scholarships for children of people in law enforcement in the state.
“Now,” as Nappy noted, “The chief will have more time to make that tournament even better than it has been.”
