Surging Toll Gate ready to make playoff run

The Toll Gate boys soccer team has been one of the hottest teams in the state this season and is currently in a battle for the top seed in Division IV.

The Titans have been dominant all season and are unbeaten in league play with a 9-0-3 record. With just two games remaining, the Titans are looking to finish strong and have a chance to earn the top seed. Toll Gate is currently in second place behind Scituate, who it tied 2-2 in an earlier meeting this fall.

“The last few games have been tougher for us. We are getting everyone’s best effort seeing as we are the only team that has not lost a game yet. We’ve had a few ties so it is not bad, but we are not where we know we can be,” said Toll Gate coach Jason Melo, who feels that the stiffer competition recently will help give the team a taste of what’s to come in the postseason. “Those games are crucial for us moving forward and into the playoffs. Those games can teach you much more than when you are just winning every game. The boys know what it takes to make it to the playoffs and hopefully now we can go and win a championship.”

The Titans have been led by standout attacker Aiden Preuit, who has been one of the most dangerous offensive weapons in the division. However, Preuit has missed time recently due to injury but is set to return come playoff time. The Titans have been looking to other leaders to replace the production.

“Guys that have really stood out have been Edrees Heidari and Christian Dias. Those guys have really stepped up and helped us make up for some of the goals since Aiden has been out. It is not easy to make up for those goals so those two have done very well,” said Melo.

The team has also recorded five shutouts and only allowed four multi-score games on defense.

“We have gone through a couple of keepers that have all done well, and our defense has been playing hard all year and has not had many injuries. It has been the same group all year. Those boys have been playing their butts off,” said Melo.

Toll Gate will have to win its final two games while Scituate would need to lose one in order to clinch the top seed. The Titans are not concerned about seeding, though, as the playoffs approach.

“Wherever we finish, we finish. It will have nothing to do with our mindset,” said Melo.
