Shocked at agreement

Posted

To the Editor:

I grew up in Johnston and have always loved my hometown. On January 10, I watched in shock as Mayor Polisena agreed to sell Providence water to Invenergy, a corporation pushing to build a power plant in Burrillville, even though residents and elected representatives there do not want it. While other municipalities stood with Burrillville, Johnston officials sold us all out during a minutes-long hearing conducted without the testimony of Johnston or Burrillville citizens, who were kept out of the room and out of the process.

Later, Mayor Polisena told news sources that he has no concern about environmental impacts, even though many of us do not share his cavalier perspective. This is not what a democratic process looks like. Our water is not a commodity.

Not what democracy look like, not what RI law looks like. For more about the latter see http://www.rifuture.org/pvd-johnston-water-debt/
