Serving off-reservation native families

The Rhode Island Indian Council recently announced its Indian Parent and Child Services, IPCS. IPCS serves off-reservation Native Families in RI and nearby CT and MA through parenting education, referrals and support -- all through a Native lens with the goal of improving overall family functioning.

Are you a Native parent, grandparent, or kinship provider living off-reservation? Are you a kinship provider needing financial assistance or need help to gain cooperation from your child with less stress? Worried about managing social media, dating, drug use and driving for your teen? Express more Native traditions through effective parenting and meet other families like you. Please join us monthly for fun and informative discussions led by Native clinicians and artisans. Can’t join us in-person? Join us remotely and research self-help info through our iPad Loan program.

The work of the IPCS aims to bolster Native parenting by reducing maltreatment and the potential out-of-home placement of Native Children. The program also recruits and supports Native Foster Homes to ensure that ICWA is adhered to when a child enters foster care. By combining mainstream research and practice with Native traditions, these efforts improve the health and wellness of Native Families and strengthens the culture for the next generation.

Executive Director, Darrell Waldron has led the agency for over 45 years of successful workforce development for Native youth and adults. Preserving child welfare, family functioning and cultural integrity has always been at the heart of the agency’s mission. It is with a great sense of hope that the agency pilots this rare, off-reservation prevention program. The program operates Monday through Friday 9a-5p at the RIIC offices, 807 Broad Street, Providence, RI.

For more information, or to RSVP for session below, please call: IPCS Assistant Director, Nanette Thayer at 401. 781-1098 x 309, or email at NThayer@rhodeislandindiancouncil.org.

From 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Aug. 25, the RI Department of Health will hold Caring for the Substance Exposed Newborn/Safe Sleep. The event will take place at 807 Broad St., Providence. Please RSVP as above.
