The Johnston School Committee convened on January 14 for a reorganization of its officers and subcommittees.
This meeting is the first reflecting a major change in the committee’s makeup. This past November, voters approved a referendum that allowed the town to add four new members – two to be appointed by the mayor and two to be appointed by the town council.
The current members of the Johnston School Committee are Dawn Aloisio, MarySue Andreozzi, Zachary Gordon, Robert LaFazia, Susan Mansolillo, Phanida Phivilay, Joseph Rotella, Gregory Russo, and Carolyn Thornton Iannuccilli.
The Mayor appointed Russo and Phivilay, while the town council appointed Gordon and Thornton Iannuccilli.
Despite Chairperson LaFazia’s absence due to illness, he consented for the meeting to proceed. All nominations were agreed upon unanimously, with each nominee abstaining from voting for themselves.
Rotella was elected as the new chairperson, succeeding LaFazia. Mansolillo was elected vice chairperson. The appointment of a clerk secretary was postponed, as there were no nominations for the role. Andreozzi and Russo were chosen as co-chairs for social activities.
The committee also finalized appointments to various subcommittees:
Building and Grounds Subcommittee: Chaired by Rotella, with LaFazia, Mansolillo, and Thornton Iannuccilli serving as members.
Policy Subcommittee: Chaired by Aloisio, with Andreozzi and Russo as members.
Contracts Subcommittee: Chaired by Rotella, with Gordon serving alongside.
Health Committee: Led by Andreozzi, with Thornton Iannuccilli and Phivilay serving.
Safety Committee: Chaired by LaFazia, with Phivilay appointed.
The Finance and Scholarship subcommittees will have their leadership and membership finalized during the next meeting.
Additionally, the committee approved the 2025 meeting calendar, with regular meetings scheduled for February 11, March 11, April 8, May 13, June 10, July 8, August 12, September 9, October 14, November 18, and December 9. Meetings are typically held in the N.A. Ferri Middle School Library at 7:00 p.m. unless notated otherwise.
