Following Sunday Mass the congregation at St. Rose and Clement Church gathered on the church steps for a reading of more than 100 parishioners who have served or are currently serving in the armed services. A highlight of the event is the naming of an individual from those ranks as this year’s honoree. This year Staff Sergeant Geoffrey Canham, a member of the Rhode Island National Guard for 17 years, was recognized. SSgt. Canham, who is a UH-60 Black Hawk mechanic, was twice deployed to the Middle East, once from October 2011 to September 2012 in Kuwait during Operation Enduring Freedom and from October 2017 to September 2018 during Operation Spartan Shield in Iraq. He has also served in Japan and Alaska. He has received numerous citations and awards. Seen here with SSgt. Canham, Father Andrew Messina, pastor of St Rose & Clement, said “Sergeant Canham is a very devout Catholic who lives his faith in Jesus Christ every day. His service to this parish has been extraordinary and our parish family is very grateful for his many efforts.” (Warwick Beacon photos)
