Friends of Gorton Pond held their inaugural event Saturday with a cleanup, registration and survey. Organizer Christine Kellerman was encouraged by the turnout, reporting that all those taking the survey favored reopening the pond beach to swimming. At one time the beach was one of those staffed with lifeguards. Since then, however, brush has grown up along the shoreline and lilly pads have filled in much of what was the swimming area. Kellerman notes restoring the beach will likely require Department of Environmental Management approval. She said those attending were Greenwood residents with most of them having properties on the pond. Ward 7 Councilman and City Council President Steve McAllister donned gloves and carried a plastic bag to help cleanup the area. In addition to finding a few discarded coffee cups, he picked up a number of nip bottles. Holding up one of the items retrieved, he said, “I haven’t seen a plastic bottle of vodka since I was in college.” McAllister also found a couple of downed road signs, which he photographed and sent to the Department of Public Works. Kellerman is hopeful the group will grow and urged those interested to email her at friendsofgortonpond@gmail.com. (Warwick Beacon photos)
