Gina Dooley, president of the Gaspee Days Committee, seen here with Rep. Joseph McNamara and Cranston Mayor Ken Hopkins, promised during Saturday’s Gaspee proclamation ceremony at Pawtuxet Park that this year's Gaspee Parade will be bigger and better than ever. That didn’t look to be the case two months ago when the committee voted to hold a scaled-back parade because of its inability to raise funds during the pandemic. Once the community learned of the situation, donations poured in, and with McNamara announcing a $10,000 legislative grant, Dooley reported more than $62,000 had been raised. Following comments from Dooley, McNamara, Hopkins and Warwick Mayor Frank Picozzi, the Pawtuxet Rangers fife and drums entertained the group. The parade, with Angelica Penta serving as grand marshal and retired Warwick Police Chief Stephen McCartney carrying the mace, steps off Saturday, June 11, at 10 a.m. (Herald photos)
