A spring tradition

NEWEST GRAVE: Brayton Cemetery became the final resting place of Robert Darigan who for decades helped cleanup the cemetery. He died in early 2020 and his grandson, Danny Hall, worked to have him buried at Brayton. Hall is now the driving force of semi-annual cemetery cleanups.

LEAVES BY THE TARP: Holly Lopes and her daughter Amber rakes leaves by the tarpaulin and then dragged them to a roll off box provided by the city.

A QUORUM: Susan Cabeceiras and Warwick Historic Cemeteries Commission member Cindy Corum and chair Pegee Malcolm wielded rakes in the cleanup.

PUSHING BACK: Danny Hall is looking to clear a section of Brayton Cemetery where there are no graves that has become overgrown with brush trees. Volunteers concentrated on the project Saturday as well as conducting a pickup and raking of the Apponaug cemetery.

The Warwick Historic Cemeteries Commission joined scores of volunteers Saturday for the spring cleanup of the Brayton Cemetery in Apponaug. It was a big scale effort made all the more possible by a roll off box provided by the city for trees, leaves and branches. Danny Hall, following in the path of his grandfather Robert Darigan who voluntarily took on stewardship of the cemetery, oversaw the effort. Hall’s focus has been to push back the overgrowth of trees and brush on the back end of the cemetery so as to reclaim a dirt road that was once there. (Warwick Beacon photos)
