City Department of Public Works crews removed all 42 metal blue box planters Saturday from Post Road in Apponaug. Costing $5,000 each, the planters were part of the federally/state funded Apponaug circulator project. Mayor Frank Picozzi made removal of the planters, which have generated complaints, as an objective . He soon discovered moving them would require DOT approval that he pursued relentlessly. Temporarily located at Veterans Middle School, the planters will be used at school entrances as a means of blocking vehicles from driving into the school. The boxes were lifted onto a flatbed truck and driven to Vets where front end loader operator Jason Fratus, seen as the controls, off loaded them. (Warwick Beacon photos)
