Wanting to support BankRI’s annual Summer Food Drive, Western Hills Middle School students Alexander Rodriguez, left, and his sister, Nayliana, played their own version of “Supermarket Sweep” during a family shopping trip. Using a set dollar amount, the kids were able to gather (and then donate) 139 items from the most-needed foods list, including oatmeal, cereal, canned fruits and vegetables. From July 12 to Aug. 20, BankRI collected food at all of its branches statewide, with each location partnering with a food pantry in its community to ensure donated food remained local to help area residents. Throughout the six-week effort, the bank also matched all donations to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank, up to a total of $10,000. Across BankRI’s three Cranston branches, nearly 500 pounds of food was collected. (Courtesy of BankRI)
