Rix walks marathon in Ward 2

While thousands participated in the annual Boston Marathon over the holiday weekend, Warwick City Councilman Jeremy Rix held a marathon of his own, walking 26.2 miles across Ward 2 on Saturday.

Rix said that when he has his annual fundraisers and does other campaign activities he tries to do something helpful as well.

This year he decided to help by calling on supporters to donate to his campaign. His plan was to walk at least 26.2 miles and for every $100 he raised over $2,620 he would walk an additional mile.

“I wasn't 100 percent comfortable organizing a large in-person gathering this year,” Rix said.  “So, it seemed right to have a walk where I'd be taking photos to report issues to the City and posting highlights of our neighborhood on Facebook.  And, if I'm going to walk, why not make it a marathon?”

He started Saturday from his home in Norwood quickly meeting up with Council President Steve McAllister who got a tour of the area.

Later in the day Ward 9 City Councilman Vincent Gebhart, who used to live in Ward 2 himself, joined him.

Rep. Joe McNamara, and Rep. David Bennett who split Ward 2 as representatives on Smith Hill both joined the walk as well to learn more about some of the issues constituents face.

In addition to elected officials, Rix was also joined by his wife Monica for portions of the marathon, along with constituents in the Ward including members of the Ward 2 Committee.

On Sunday, he walked just under three miles in the Pilgrim Park area, where he pointed out that Cushing and Ballou Roads are in “particularly bad shape compared to others in the area.”

“I’m continuing to advocate for them to be prioritized for repaving. The Beta Group Report evaluating the City's roads and setting priorities for repaving was supposed to be released a year ago still isn't finalized, so, I've been following up with the City on that,” said Rix. “Hopefully we can address many of the roads across Ward 2 that are in rough shape, some of which haven't been paved in my lifetime.”

He also said that he is advocating for improvements to sidewalks in the area.

“Fairfax Drive desperately needs a sidewalk, and some sidewalks by Holliman Elementary are in very rough shape,” Rix said.

Monday he was joined by General Treasurer Seth Magaziner at Pilgrim High School, where they spoke about issues in the community. Rix flanked with supporters and his campaign manager Kathleen Decker continued to the Pilgrim Senior Center before making their way through the rest of the Pilgrim neighborhood, followed by Spring Green, and Hoxsie North.

In total Rix walked about 38 miles in order to walk every neighborhood in his Ward and raised about $2,000. He called it a success.

"It was great to see so many people and enjoy a beautiful weekend in the neighborhood,” Rix said.
