RIC golf wraps up season

FROM STAFF REPORTS Head Coach Gene St. Pierre’s (Career record: 2-2; .500) team wrapped up the 2021 season with a third place (four teams) finish at the Little East Invitational on April 22-23. 

Sophomore William Niles (Warwick) was named the team MVP. Niles averaged a score of 78.7 in two competitions on the year. Niles shot a season-best 76 at the first round of the Little East Invitational on Apr. 22.

RIC shot a 345 on day one of the tournament and a 326 during the second day of competition. The Anchormen defeated Mitchell, 309-352, on April 8 and also faced Eastern Connecticut in match-play action on April 15. 

Senior Matt Malo (Cranston) averaged a 99.5 in one competition on the season. He shot a season-low score of 98 in the second round of the Little East Invitational on Apr. 23.  

Senior Stephen Maybach (Saunderstown) averaged a score of 98.7 in two competitions on the season. Maybach shot a season-low score of 95 against Mitchell College on Apr. 8.

Junior Justin Lavoie (Lakeville, Mass.) averaged a score of 83.6 in two competitions on the year. Lavoie shot a season-best score of 79 against Mitchell College on Apr. 8.

Sophomore Anthony Loiselle (Providence) averaged a score of 81.7 in two competitions on the year. Loiselle shot a season-best score and was the medalist with a 76 against Mitchell College on Apr. 8. 

Sophomore Nate Chhim (Tiverton) averaged a score of 82.7 two competitions on the year. Chimm shot a season-best score of 77 against Mitchell College on Apr. 8. Zincone, Gamelin honored by Rawlings  

Rhode Island College senior third baseman Ray Zincone (West Warwick) and junior reliever Shaun Gamelin (West Kingston) were named Third Team All-New England by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings for their respective performances during the 2021 season. 

Zincone, who was also a Third Team D3baseball.com All-New England and Third Team All-Little East selection, played in 34 games, starting all of them. He batted .363 (41-for-113) with 38 runs scored, 41 hits, 14 doubles, one triple, 29 RBI and three stolen bases. He owned a .504 slugging percentage, a .516 on-base percentage and an .894 fielding percentage. 

Gamelin, who was also a First Team All-Little East selection, appeared in 13 games. He was 3-0 with four saves, a 2.89 ERA and 42 strikeouts in 18.2 innings of work. He was named the Little East Pitcher of the Week once. 

Head Coach Frank Holbrook’s team finished the 2021 season with a 23-11 overall record and a 12-4 (Second Place Tie) finish in the Little East.
