Pryor announces bid for General Treasurer

While most  of the attention across the state has been focused on the Governor and 2nd Congressional District race, a Democratic Primary is likely in the General Treasurer race after Stefan Pryor, the current Rhode Island Secretary of Commerce announced that he would be a candidate on Tuesday.

“I am proud to announce my candidacy for the office of General Treasurer,” said Pryor. “Serving as Rhode Island’s Secretary of Commerce for the past seven years has been a true privilege. I thank both Governors Raimondo and McKee for the opportunity. In the position of Treasurer, I aim to continue our work on strengthening Rhode Island’s finances and advancing our economy. The last two years have been very challenging for small businesses and industries impacted by the pandemic – and for Rhode Island’s families. We envision a Treasurer’s office that is a catalyst for the economy, creating a stronger financial future for retirees and for all Rhode Islanders, supporting small and minority-owned businesses, helping families access the banking system, and more.”

Pryor is expected to transition out of his current state position within the next two weeks. Until then he said he won’t accept any campaign contributions from people in Rhode Island.

Before taking the post as Commerce Secretary Pryor was the President of the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, the public agency charged with coordinating the rebuilding of Lower Manhattan after September 11th.  He also served as Deputy Mayor for Economic Development in Newark, New Jersey and as Connecticut’s Education Commissioner, according to a press release.

In addition to Pryor former Central Falls Mayor James Diossa has announced his intentions of running in the Democratic Primary. Current General Treasurer Seth Magaziner is term-limited and is running for the 2nd Congressional District seat.

On the Republican side, current North Kingstown Finance Director  James Lathrop has announced his candidacy for the seat.
