Proposed solar ordinance 'a win'

To the Editor:

Last week the Warwick Planning Board held an important and well-attended meeting to review a proposed solar siting ordinance and related changes to the City’s Comprehensive Plan.

The proposed ordinance is a big win for Warwick with three main elements. One, it protects the City’s open space and residential areas. Two, it encourages roof-top solar and solar canopies in the City’s commercial and industrial areas. Three, it establishes siting requirements for potential commercial solar development on contaminated sites.

The Planning Department is responding to clear and strong advocacy from Warwick residents for a smart solar strategy for Warwick. The Planning Board will take up this issue again at its Dec. 8 meeting. Please put that date on your calendar.  Come to the next Planning Board meeting to show your support for renewable energy siting regulations that protect Warwick’s neighborhoods, open space, farmland, and forests, too.
