ROLLOVER CRASH

Around 9:55 a.m., on Monday, July 11, members of the Rhode Island State Police (RISP) Wickford Barracks, the State Police Commercial Enforcement Unit, the Department of Environmental Management, and the Warwick Fire Department responded to a tractor-trailer rollover crash on the ramp from the Airport Connector to Route 95 South in the City of Warwick.

The tractor-trailer rolled over and struck the guardrail along the ramp, rupturing one of the fuel tanks, according to a RISP press release. The tractor-trailer was carrying 43,000 pounds of solar panels that had to be offloaded before the vehicle could be righted and towed, police said.

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation assisted with a detour from the Airport Connector westbound to Route 95 North, which was expected to remain in place throughout the afternoon and early evening.

CATALYTIC CONVERTER THEFT

Around 11:08 a.m., June 28, a man walked into the lobby of Warwick Police Headquarters to report a larceny. He told police that someone stole the catalytic converter from his vehicle while it was parked at Warwick Mall, 400 Bald Hill Road.

The victim told police that he was inside the mall, at the JC Penney store, getting his watch fixed. He parked his vehicle, a blue 2005 Honda CR-V, by the south entrance and entered the store around 10:15 a.m. He exited around 10:35 a.m. and started his vehicle, but it made a very loud noise. He took his vehicle to Flynn Automotive in Narragansett and they told him the catalytic converter was missing, and likely stolen.

The victim told police that he contacted Warwick Mall Security and they reviewed video surveillance footage.

“(The victim) was advised that an unknown vehicle could be seen pulling up near his car; however they were unable to see the subject who stole his catalytic converter,” police wrote in the incident report.

The victim filed the police report for insurance purposes.

HIT & RUN

At 7:24 p.m., June 29, Warwick Police were dispatched to the Speedway at 61 Airport Road to investigate the report of a man passed out behind the steering wheel of a black 2008 Ford super duty truck. The vehicle was also identified as the suspect vehicle in a prior hit and run.

Once on the scene, Warwick Police Officer Ben L. Bratko woke up the driver and identified him as Mark Masterson, of 170 Park Ave., Cranston.

“Upon removing Masterson I observed that his face was flushed, his eyes were bloodshot and glassy, and he was unsteady on his feet,” Bratko wrote. “When I asked Masterson if he had anything to drink he stated that he had two beers.”

Police smelled alcohol on his breath. Masterson was allegedly holding an unopened nip bottle in his hand, and there was an open container of “what appeared to be beer” in the vehicle’s cup holder.

Masterson consented to a series of Standardized Field Sobriety Tests. After, he was determined by police to be under the influence, so he was cuffed and placed in the back of a police cruiser.

Masterson allegedly swore at police, and told them to call his boss. Police determined the man worked for a landscaping business, and the truck belonged to the business owner. Police called the business/truck owner, and he told them that Masterson did not have consent to drive the truck.

“He attempted to contact Masterson to tell him to stop driving it,” Bratko wrote. “After multiple calls and texts to Masterson he was advised Masterson had been involved in a hit and run. (The truck’s owner) stated that he wished to press charges against Masterson for driving his vehicle without consent.”

At police headquarters, Masterson refused to take a breath test.

He was charged with Driving Without Consent of Owner of Lessee, DUI of Liquor and/or Drugs (BAC unknown), Failure to Stop for an Accident Resulting in Damage to an Attended Vehicle, Driving with an Expired License (third offense) and Refusal to Submit to a Chemical Test.
