The Pilgrim baseball team shut out visiting Cranston West 2-0 to pick up an opening day win on Monday afternoon.

Pilgrim pitcher Colby Barker was lights out on the mound, going all seven innings and allowing no runs on just three hits while striking out seven batters. Barker only walked one batter as well.

The two teams were scoreless heading into the third inning, but Pilgrim would get on the board when DJ Sollitto knocked in a run. Sean Gallagher would add some relief when he added another RBI in the fifth inning to give Pilgrim the 2-0 lead.

Luciano Leone took the mound for West and delivered a solid outing, allowing just two runs on three hits across five innings of work while striking out five batters. Anthony DeCotis came on in relief and allowed no hits in one inning of work and recorded a strikeout.

Although the Falcon pitchers were strong and received help defensively throughout, the West bats were cold as they only collected three hits, including just one extra base hit.

“We played very well defensively and got some great pitching from Luciano. Unfortunately we only had three hits. (Barker) kept us off-balance and mixed up his pitches as well. Some of it had to do with it being the first game of the year, not seeing an abundance of life pitching (during the preseason). They are hungry (for Thursday’s rematch against Pilgrim), they were hungry to get this one but unfortunately it didn’t work out that way,” said West coach Rob Malo.

West graduated a large senior core from last year’s playoff team that pulled off the big upset over top-ranked Bishop Hendricken in the postseason. Key returners to the starting lineup include Leone, catcher Cole Carbone and Colby Kuzman. Guys like DeCotis, Jacob Chinn, Edwin Silverio and Nicholas Masse will be relied on to help fill out the roster as well.

The Falcons are currently missing multiple pitchers to start the season, but Malo has faith in Leone, who is excited to serve as the team’s ace this spring.

“He’s ready. He embraces it and that’s what he wants. He’s a gamer,” Malo said.

“Right now pitching is our thin spot. We’re hoping in the second half the year to get some more depth so right now we are just trying to work with what we have and not over exert them.”

Carbone hit a double for West while Chin and Silverio added hits as well. West will next be in action on Thursday when it hosts Pilgrim for the home opener.
