Pilgrim punches ticket to semis

By ALEX SPONSELLER The top-seeded Pilgrim girls soccer team beat No. 8 Barrington 3-1 in the Division I Quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon at home.

The Lady Pats would get on the board early and take a 2-0 lead into the halftime break. Although Barrington would score a goal of its own in the second, the Pats were able to hold it off and get some late insurance to wrap up the 3-1 win.

Senior Alanna Coffie scored a pair of goals for Pilgrim in the win while Sarah Lynch added another. Gillian Brown recorded two assists while Amaya Coffie had one. Pilgrim keeper Janelle Mixner finished the day with seven saves in net.

“It was a good start. Barrington is a very good team that lost a few talented players throughout the season. So when we played them, they were the eighth seed but really weren’t an eighth seed. They are talented and very well coached. It was fantastic to get the win against them and we responded well to their style with the players that we didn’t see before (in the regular season),” said Pilgrim coach Tom Flanders.

The Pats continued to get steady production from its usual suspects in Alanna Coffie and Lynch. Flanders was excited to see his go-to producers step up once again on the big stage.

“I’m extremely happy for them. To see them performing at this level, to see them performing throughout the season, I’m very happy for them. They were happy to get that first quarterfinal game out of the way, teams are playing for their lives. Division I is a difficult division to play in when the teams are so equally balanced so when you win, it feels incredible,” said Flanders.

Pilgrim’s relentless pace has also been key in its success.

“One part of our game that is extremely strong is our work rate, they don’t stop working and they’re always plotting on how to get the ball. They’re a fun team to watch,” Flanders said.

Pilgrim went on to host North Kingstown in the semifinals on Wednesday, but the results were not available at press time.

Pilgrim went 2-0 against the Skippers in the regular season by a combined score of 9-0. Although Pilgrim was the favorite heading into the next round, Flanders emphasized focus and taking it one step at a time.

“(The regular season matchups) don’t mean anything now, it’s a one-game season,” Flanders said. “We need to make sure that our intensity level is right and we respect our opponent. We need to play the game that we want to play.”
