By ALEX SPONSELLER The Pilgrim girls basketball team fell to Providence Country Day 52-41 on the road last week.

Despite a strong second-half push, the visiting Pats were unable to close the gap as PCD ran away with the victory.

Giana Ramos led Pilgrim with 10 points scored while Keira Maher added eight, including two 3-pointers.

Pilgrim fell to 2-8 in league play with the loss. The team dealt with a COVID situation earlier in the year and has struggled to regain its momentum in recent games.

“We got COVID and had to play with six girls, we lost for starters. But the girls played great during it, they competed. But since we got back from COVID, we just haven’t been able to get on the same page,” said coach Scott Bayha.

Pilgrim also has been relying on a handful of underclassmen this season who have had no varsity experience in the past.

“We are playing with seven new girls, those girls are playing their first ever high school basketball this year. That is why were struggling, some of those girls are playing significant minutes for us,” said Bayha, who has been pleased with the effort level despite the team’s struggles. “These kids are playing hard, they are working hard and showing commitment, they have great attitudes, no drama.”

The team was set to take on Block Island on Monday but the game was postponed. Pilgrim took on Falls on Wednesday, but the results were not available at press time.

As the team enters the last leg of its regular season, Bayha and company are still eyeing the postseason.

“Playoffs are still a possibility which is what our goal is. We’re hoping to get in the playoffs and start a new season there,” Bayha said. “We just need to take one game at a time. We need to protect the ball, we turn it over a ton. And we need to play with confidence. Because of our record and some of our losses, our confidence has wavered a bit. If we value the ball and play with confidence, we still feel we can do some damage.”
