Pilgrim poised to make playoff run

By ALEX SPONSELLER The Pilgrim baseball team is in the thick of the playoff hunt as it enters the last leg of its regular season schedule.

The Pats sat at 6-5 with a 5-5 league record heading into Wednesday and won two of its past three outings.

Pilgrim edged Bishop Hendricken 10-9, then shut out Cranston East 6-0 before falling 1-0 to Cumberland over the weekend.

In the victory over Hendricken, Pilgrim was led by Cam Nadeau who went 2-for-3 with three RBI, as well as Kenny Rix who went 4-for-5 with three RBI as well.

Chase Pariseau led Pilgrim in the win over Cranston East by going 2-for-4 with three RBI. Pitcher Jared Reminder tossed seven shutout innings, allowing just one hit and recording six strikeouts.

Rix took the mound for the Pats against Cumberland and allowed one run on just five hits and striking out eight batters.

“We’ve split with Hendricken, North Kingstown, dropped a tough one to Smithfield early in the year but overall we have been playing pretty well. Our seniors have stepped up and even the games we lost, they have been games that we have been in. We’ve been in every game we’ve played which is what we’re looking for,” said Pilgrim coach Nolan Landy.

The Pats have gone toe to toe with some of the top units in the state this season, despite featuring a roster that contains just three seniors.

“Losing last year was crazy, so for us, we really only have our three seniors in Jared Reminder, Kenny Rix, Chase Pariseau as well as (junior) Sean Gallagher behind the plate that know our system. The rest of the guys behind them are pretty new … this is the first year with me and participating at the varsity level,” said Landy.

Pilgrim’s starting pitching has been some of the best in the state to this point, with ace Reminder boasting a 5-0 record with an sub-1 ERA. Rix has also been steady in the No. 2 spot.

Pilgrim’s bats have also started to heat up as of late, and Landy feels that the team is trending in the right direction late in the season.

“It’s our pitching and our bats. Jared has been phenomenal, Kenny Rix has been throwing the ball well but has had some tough luck. The top half of our lineup has been swinging the bat really well which helps,” said Landy.

Pilgrim took on Lincoln on Wednesday, but the results were not available at press time. The Pats will face Lincoln again on Friday and then close out the regular season with a pair of games against Tolman.

“These last four games are going to be huge for us and we need to focus on doing the things that we need to do to win games,” Landy said. “The team that does the little things best will win so we need to do the little things perfectly to hopefully come out on the winning end.”
