Pezza making early impact at RIC

Freshman Quiana Pezza (Cranston) finished third in the triple jump (10.70m) while junior Haley Oliver (Coventry) finished second in the 3,000m (10:31.86) as the Rhode Island College women’s track and field team competed at the Suffolk Relays held at The Track at New Balance on Saturday afternoon. Oliver also finished sixth in the 1000m (3:05.31).
Junior Tayshia Cary (Wakefield) finished third in the 200m open (26.46) and 33rd in the long jump (4.03m).
Senior Samantha Sainristil (Cranston) finished eighth in the weight throw (15.13m) and 11th in the shot (11.32m).
Freshman Bendu Kamara (Pawtucket) finished 13th in the 400m (1:05.96). Sophomore Shirley Portillo (North Providence) finished 17th in the 800m (2:53.96).
Junior Bethanie Jean-Phillipe (Cranston) finished 18th in the triple jump (8.85m). Freshman Gianna Wilson (Pawtucket) finished 20th in the 800m (3:06.95).
Junior Milana Melvin (Johnston) finished 20th in the weight throw (11.39m).
Sophomore Lexie Zakrzewski (Taunton, Mass.) finished 23rd in the 400m (1:08.68) and 51st in the 200m open (29.47).
Freshman Funmilayo Mclin (Providence) finished 25th in the weight throw (11.13m). Junior Valeria Uribe Calderon (Central Falls) finished 28th in the 400m (1:15.10).
Sophomore Marlyn Dunlop (Providence) finished 65th in the 200m open (30.57).
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will compete at the University of Rhode Island Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 18 (11 a.m.).

RIC swim beats Gordon
Fifth-year Alina Krafton (Wakefield) won the 200-yard freestyle (2:20.62) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:12.99) as Rhode Island College lost vs. Gordon College, 158-84, in collegiate women’s swimming action held at the Bennett Center on Saturday afternoon.
Krafton also finished second in the 200-yard medley relay (2:08.03) and the 50-yard butterfly (31.17).
Fifth-year Anna Vygoder (Lincoln) won the 50-yard breaststroke (33.03) and finished second in the 200-yard medley relay (2:08.03), 100-yard breaststroke (1:12.86) and the 50-yard freestyle (27.71)
Junior Morgan McCann (Pawtucket) finished second in the 200-yard medley relay (2:08.03) and third in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:21.05), 100-yard freestyle (1:06.51) and the 200-yard IM (2:42.16).
Freshman Taryn Reed (Pascoag) finished second in the 200-yard medley relay (2:08.03), and third in both the 100-yard backstroke (1:17.31) and the 50-yard backstroke (36.73).
Sophomore Elizabeth Shepard (Smithfield) finished fourth in the 50-yard butterfly (46.54), 100-yard freestyle (1:27.71) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:48.97).
Junior Olivia Landry (Lincoln) finished fifth in the 50-yard butterfly (48.17), 100-yard freestyle (1:36.10) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:51.39).
Sophomore Kate Clayman (Smithfield) finished third in the 200-yard freestyle relay (2:19.13) and fifth in the 200-yard freestyle (2:47.03), 50-yard freestyle (33.92) and the 500-yard freestyle (7:46.15).
Freshman Tina Huang (East Greenwich) finished third in the 200-yard freestyle relay (2:19.13), fourth in the 500-yard freestyle (7:31.06) and fifth in both the 100-yard backstroke (1:32.20) and the 50-yard backstroke (44.48).
Sophomore Ivy Par (Pawtucket) finished third in the 200-yard freestyle relay (2:19.13), fourth in the 200-yard IM (3:06.82) and fifth in both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:39.83) and the 50-yard breaststroke (45.18).
Sophomore Abigail Steinhilber (Warwick) finished third in the 200-yard freestyle relay (2:19.13), fourth in both 100-yard backstroke (1:31.79) and the 50-yard backstroke (44.01) and sixth in the 50-yard freestyle (38.75).
