Cranston Combined Percussion (CCP) went to the Winter Guard International World Championships in Dayton, Ohio last week. The top 32 teams made it to the semifinals, including CCP.
Led by Band Director Greg Arsenault, the team put on two different performances; one was an arrangement and orchestral piece of Jupiter by Gustav Holst. The other, a show called “Bringer of Joy,” which Arsenault described as upbeat and uplifting.
“The championships trip was a great experience,” Arsenault said. “We had two great performances, and the kids got to see a lot of amazing groups perform. The trip overall was great for the kids to enjoy.”
CCP has 30 members, primarily from Cranston High School East and Cranston High School West. Arsenault said this year he has around 13 seniors graduating. He expects a big group next year but with more younger kids and about four or five seniors.
"The overall year was successful,” Arsenault said. “We worked really hard and brought a lot of joy with our “Bringer of Joy” show. And we were the New England champions, [so] we have a lot to be proud of."
Earlier in the month, CCP won first place at the New England Scholastic Band Association Percussion Marching A Class, snagging the top spot with a score of 93.6.
