The Pilgrim softball team picked up a 10-2 win over host La Salle Academy last week to make a statement in the Division I group.

The Pats offense was hot from the start and Pilgrim would take a quick 2-0 lead when Alyssa Twomey hit a two-run homer in the first inning. The Pats would add to their lead when Madison Wrench and Audra McDonnell knocked in runs to make it 5-0. Genna D’Amato would then hit a two-run single to make it 7-0 in the fourth inning.

Although the Rams would add a pair of runs of their own to stay within striking distance, Pilgrim would add some insurance in the seventh when Sophia Chevian and Gillian Brown knocked in runs to set the score to 10-2.

Pilgrim finished with six different batters picking up RBI.

“This year we have a really deep lineup and it’s good that everyone is putting in the effort. We have a really good lineup and it’s good to see everyone play so well. It builds our confidence, we had a few tough games so I think that this was a great turning point playing the way we did today,” said Twomey, who also finished with six strikeouts in the circle.

“That’s the strength of our team, every day it’s someone different. That’s what we harp on, we don’t care who it is as long as we end up in the win column. The girls have bought into that from Day 1 and today it showed,” added Pilgrim coach Carlos Rodas.

Twomey’s big day at the plate and on the mound added to what should be another All-State campaign for the junior phenom.

“Alyssa is the best player in the state, that is how I feel. Nothing she does surprises us anymore. Whether it is the first inning home run, pitching another gem, she’s at the point where it is almost expected. She’s been that for two years, so that’s not surprising,” said Rodas.

Pilgrim improved to 12-1 on the season and further cemented its place as the favorite to take hom the title next month. Rodas hopes the team can use the decisive win over the powerhouse Rams as fuel for the final push.

“You come to La Salle, see those jerseys, I think the girls were excited for this one. We need to bring the energy no matter who the opponent is, but I knew that it wasn’t going to be forced today. They didn’t need a rah rah speech, they came in ready to play,” Rodas said. “Our problem is sometimes not knowing much about our oppornrt and coming out flat. Today though, kudos to them, so hopefully we can carry this energy into the playoffs.”
