Pats lose third straight

The Pilgrim football team dropped its third straight decision, this time in a 34-18 comeback loss to defending champion Narragansett last Friday night.

The Pats would take an 18-13 lead into the halftime break. Dylan Roberts rushed for a touchdown in the opening drive of the game to give Pilgrim the lead. Quarterback Carter Clifton would connect on a touchdown pass to Jack Coffey late in the second quarter, then the Pats recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff to regain possession. Clifton rushed for another score just before the break to mount the five-point lead.

Narragansett would take off in the second half and return two interceptions for touchdowns to run away with the road win.

The loss drops Pilgrim’s league record to 1-2 and 1-4 overall.

“We just need to put together for good quarters. We’ve been getting a good first half or a good second half, usually it has been a good first half. Defensively, we have not been giving up that many points,” said Pilgrim head coach Blake Simpson. “It has been scoop-and-scores, interception returns, special teams touchdowns that have made the scores the last two weeks look the way they have been.”

Pilgrim has a very young roster, made up of underclassmen and first-year players. Inexperience has taken its toll in the past three games, according to Simpson.

“It’s just the growing pains of most of our offense being first-year varsity players. It has been taking time for us to put points on the board, but we are looking forward to the continued growth for the rest of the season and into next year,” said Simpson.

The Pats will next take on 2-3 Rogers on the road this Friday night. Simpson and the coaching staff intend on staying the course and playing clean football.

“We are not going to change our approach, we’re not going to pack it in, we’re waiting for the tide to turn,” Simpson said. “Rogers is a tough team, a lot of gritty players over there. They’re well coached, they have a great new coach and John Horsman. We’re hoping to put together a good four quarters and come out with a win.”
