Ortho RI celebrates grand opening of $33m facility

Ortho Rhode Island will celebrate the grand opening of their new location at 300 Crossing Boulevard this afternoon. The $33 million facility has been designed around a patient-centered workflow, with an abundance of natural light, outdoor walking space, terraces, and ample free parking.

The facility is the new home of the Warwick and East Greenwich offices, in addition to the current facilities in Providence, Wakefield, and Westerly, as well as satellite locations.

Dr. Michael Bradley, CEO and president, said in an interview Monday that the project completed on time, and only faced a few “minor bumps in the road” due to the pandemic.

The official ground breaking for the new facility was late April 2019, although the grand opening wasn’t until Thursday, March 25.

Calspan Development and Construction Company managed construction and put together financing for the operation. The construction project created 125 new jobs, and will bring more than 275 permanent bio-medical jobs to the site with a total annual payroll of $30 million, according to a press release issued by Ortho RI.

“When the founders came together and formed Ortho Rhode Island five years ago, we committed ourselves to developing the most respected patient experience in our industry,” said Dr. Bradley in a statement. “This building delivers on that promise and purpose. It is designed from the patient’s perspective, with state-of-the-art technology, patient-centered workflows, and Ambulatory SurgeryCenter, and Ortho RI Express. The facility is a tool that supports Ortho Rhode Island’s commitment to providing an unrivaled patient experience, while creating a world-class, value-drive, orthopedic delivery system for our community.”

The 66,000 square foot building is located just off Route 95 at the Crossing Office Park next to the Crowne Plaza.

“The particular spot is very important to us,” explained Dr. Bradley in an interview. “We thought it was central enough to be accessible to most of our patients. It’s easily traveled by and to.”

The first floor of the facility features Ortho RI Express injury care, physical and occupational therapy, Ortho RI Biologics, and MRI services, allowing patients with brief appointments to come and go without the elevator or stairs. The second floor contains orthopedic and podiatric office space and exam rooms, divided into four pod areas, each with its own digital x-ray equipment. The third floor houses the Ortho RI Surgery Center, with eight operating rooms and two procedure rooms.

A variety of orthopedic procedures will be performed on an outpatient basis at Ortho RI Surgery Center, while their more complex in-patient cases will continue to be performed at their local affiliate hospitals, according to the press release.

“This is an exciting advancement for Rhode Island in terms of musculoskeletal care—through a patient-focused care, innovation, and technology this campus will provide a one-of-a-kind patient experience, with easy access to the full spectrum of orthopedic care in one location,” said Dr. Bradley.

According to Dr. Bradley, having an outpatient surgery center is beneficial to both patients and payers, since it costs less to deliver care with an outpatient surgery model.

In the interview on Monday, Dr. Bradley also mentioned that the new facility will bring in eight to ten new providers over the next six months, as well as 150 jobs over the next year.

“It’s great for us, and great for the city,” he said.

Warwick Mayor Frank Picozzi said in an interview on Tuesday that the new Ortho RI facility is “a great addition to the community.”

Patients will be seen in the facility starting Monday, March 29.
