North 10’s wrap up summer

Softball All-Stars fall in state final

The Warwick North Little League 10-year-old softball All-Stars reached the state championship tournament and fell in the finals to Cranston Western.

North fell to CWLL 11-1 in the first game but would turn around to beat Barrington 18-8 to get another crack against Cranston. However, CWLL continued to impress as it rolled to a 15-0 victory to take the title.

“The bats unfortunately against Cranston, theirs were a little bit better than ours. We got the ball in and prevented extra bases but sometimes things don’t fall your way,” said North coach Kevin Wood.

Naveah DeCosta, Teagan O’Reilly, Finley Dunckley and Lorelei Hennion had big tournaments for North.

“Naveah DeCosta scored our one run against Cranston and was great on the base paths, getting into people’s heads. Teagan O’Reilly pitched phenomenal when called on. Finley Dunckley rounded out our win over Barrington with an in-the-park home run. Lorelei stopped a number of runners (at catcher) and threw out a few girls against Barrington which was big,” said Wood.

Despite the loss, Wood and company were thrilled with the team’s summer run, especially when compared to last year’s performance.

“Last year, these girls were all 9 years old and playing in the 10-U division. They made the district finals, so making it to the state finals was something that we wanted to do,” said Wood. “We hope to continue to be able to compete with Cranston West moving forward and it’s an exciting time for Warwick seeing things come together.”

Moving forward, North will look to make the proper adjustments and put its best foot forward toward next summer.

“We’re going to have to get used to the faster pitching so we’re going to develop our pitchers, try to add a few more miles per hour on our pitches. We also want to start bringing in the bigger bats to be able to get those runners on base and to score more runs,” said Wood.

Members of the Warwick North 10s included: Naveah DeCosta, Teagan O’Reilly, Finley Dunckley, Lorelei Hennion, Addison Dempsey, Aniya Neves, Nora Wood, Emely Lugo, Evey Hallam, Aubry Nichols, Ava Toher, Emme Albanese, Kaleigh Leavitt and Madison Grapensteter.
