Music on the Hill off to great start

Posted

Music on the Hill kicked off its seven-concert series with a rousing Sunday afternoon lawn concert under blue skies and gentle breezes at Warwick’s Clouds Hill Victorian Museum. The incomparable Narragansett Brass Quintet entertained the large crowd with a varied program that began with pieces by Scheidt, Gabrieli, Tull and Holst, highlighted by the Suite from The Water Music by Handel.

A brief intermission provided an opportunity to wander the beautiful grounds of the mansion before settling down for more music by Grieg and Kamen and closing with three dance episodes from Bernstein’s “On the Town.”

“French Champagne” was the theme of the Monday night concert at the First Baptist Church in East Greenwich for a varied program by French composers, including Saint-Saens, Poulenc and Debussy. Violins, harps, cellos, trumpets, pianos, flutes, violas and the mellow bass of John M. Pelligrino filled the church with wonderful sounds.

Music on the Hill continues tonight, Thursday, June 6, at 7 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Church in Cranston with music by Mozart, followed by music by Bach on Sunday afternoon, June 9 at 3 p.m. at Warwick’s St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church.

“Trio Time” is the theme for Monday night’s concert at 7 p.m. at Cranston’s Holy Apostles Church. The series ends on Wednesday, June 12 at 7 p.m. as Music on the Hill travels to the Dunn’s Corners Community Church in Westerly. Tickets are available at the door for $25.
