By ALEX SPONSELLER Pilgrim soccer goalie Janelle Mixner made her college decision official last week when she signed her National Letter of Intent to play for Division I Sacred Heart.

After months of going through the motions, Mixner was relieved to finally put the pen to the paper.

“It’s very exciting. The process was very stressful, even with COVID and everything, so to make the decision official is very stress relieving and I can put in the work to prepare now,” Mixner said.

Mixner knew early on that she wanted to play for Sacred Heart and was sold on the campus as soon as she stepped foot on it.

“I first did a visit to the school and I immediately loved the school and campus and how modern it is. I knew I wanted to go there, so I did a soccer camp at the school and really fell in love with the coaches,” said Mixner.

Heading to the Division I ranks, Mixner is expecting a big jump in competition and is focusing on keeping pace with the high pace of play.

“I am going to be focused on being prepared for the high intensity level that comes with Division I soccer. It has helped me a lot to have such a great team in front of me, it has really helped my confidence, it has helped me make the saves that I need to make,” said Mixner.

Although the Lady Pats’ season ended shorter than they hoped in the semifinals, Mixner was thankful to enjoy one last postseason ride with Pilgrim. She will also miss her coaches, teammates and the Warwick community as she wraps up her senior year.

“It’s awesome to be so successful with his team, I love this team, it’s like my second family. It’s great finishing my final year by going deep into the playoffs,” Mixner said. “I’m going to miss the team dynamic and how close we are, I’ve been playing with (Pilgrim coach Tom Flanders) and my teammates since I was little. I’ll also miss being part of this community because we give back to it a lot.”
