Hello. Again.
Six years ago, following a six-year career here, I stood up from the editor’s chair at the Johnston Sun Rise for what I thought was the last time.
I was off to work for the Johnston Police Department. There, I would first serve as a civilian in a dual role of a floater – capable of filling non-sworn positions at the station in case of absence, such as a dispatcher or the records clerk – as well as the department’s assistant public information officer. I went on to become the accreditation manager. In that role, I helped ensure that the JPD complied with established standards and best practices to achieve and maintain official accreditation. I also assisted the Lincoln Police Department with their reaccreditation process last year.
My service with these agencies provided invaluable insights into the inner workings of towns and police departments, their challenges and their successes. It was an honor to work with our dedicated public servants, witness firsthand the resilience of the police department and our community, and contribute to initiatives that made and will make Johnston a better place to live.
Now, I’m back in newsroom, eager to apply that experience to my work at the Sun Rise. The time away has strengthened my commitment to providing
accurate, insightful and compelling coverage of the issues that matter to the community. As a former resident, a Johnston Senior High School graduate and a Troop 20 Johnston Eagle Scout who was awarded the key to the town, I’m passionate about this community and its stories – stories that reflect the heart and soul of our state.
It’s my firm belief that the role of a local newspaper is more critical than ever. In an age of instant misinformation and attention-grabbing headlines, our mission remains as it always has: to inform, engage and connect. Our team will work to ensure that the Sun Rise continues to shine a light on the issues that shape Johnston, from political meetings and local events, sports and lifestyles, to the stories of neighbors who inspire us.
For the trust placed in me by the Sun Rise team and the Johnston community, I am most appreciative. When I last left, I wrote a farewell in which I said it was ‘time to turn the page.’ Together, let’s use these pages to write a new chapter for Johnston, one that celebrates successes, addresses challenges head on and strengthens the ties that make Johnston…Johnston.
I look forward to hearing from our readers. Your voices, concerns and shared ideas are the only way I’ll be able to fill this paper. Feel free to reach out, whether to share a story idea, provide feedback or say hello. Again.
