Longtime Cranston East teacher and West track coach Paul Bucci passed away on Monday morning after a 10-month battle against stage 4 metastatic rare small bowel cancer. He passed away at the HopeHealth Hulitar Hospice Center in Providence.
Bucci taught social studies at East for two decades and coached track and field with the Bolts, as well as cross country with the nearby Cranston West Falcons.
The West track and cross country teams put out a statement on Monday morning that read: “The Cranston West track & cross country community mourns the loss of longtime cross country & former track coach, Paul Bucci, who passed away this morning following a hard fought battle with cancer.
“Coach Bucci was not only a coach to our runners, but a beloved teacher at Cranston East. A friend, a mentor, an advocate, a father figure, and an unwavering supporter of student athletes in Cranston. Both on and off the track. His legacy will live on in the hundreds and hundreds of teens who benefited from his positive impact in their lives over the course of his illustrious career.”
The Rhode Island Interscholastic League also put out a statement which read: “The RIIL offers its deepest condolences to the family, friends and many student-athletes whose lives were touched by Paul Bucci, a longtime teacher in the Cranston school system, as well as Cranston East indoor & outdoor T&F coach & Cranston West boys XC coach.”
