Library’s first quiz show podcast is on cemeteries

Do you know how many historic cemeteries are in Warwick, or where John Wickes might be buried? Now, that’s a trick question, but we’ll get to that later.

Expect to get those answers and much more on the soon to be released episode on Warwick Radio Online, a podcast that focuses on Warwick news and history, premiered in summer 2021.

Wil Gregersen, Community Services Librarian at the Warwick Public Library, was compelled to expand the scope of the podcast by introducing the Warwick History Quiz Show to the podcast’s lineup of releases. Gregersen said he was motivated to create “another way for the Warwick Historical Society to be seen in the community.” He also said that his motivation is showing the audience “what makes Warwick unique in the state.”

The upcoming episode of the Warwick History Quiz Show is scheduled for Tuesday, October 11th, and the topic will be Warwick’s 166 historic cemeteries. This topic was born from conversations Gregersen had with Chair of the Warwick Historical Cemeteries Commission, Pegee Malcolm. Specifically, Gregersen said this topic was inspired by “how much [Malcolm] loves working in the cemeteries and researching the cemeteries.”

Gregersen also discussed future topics for episodes of the Warwick History Quiz Show, naming “Women in Warwick History” as a potential topic.  Thus far of the 60 episodes aired on Warwick Radio, the most popular have been on Rocky Point Park and the Hunt for the Gaspee with 123 and 94 plays respectively. The podcasts are recorded in the library on equipment made available through a grant to the library.

As the Warwick History Quiz Show continues, Gregersen said there is a need for hosts, video editors, and promoters to assist with the operations of the show. Contestants are also a needed element to make the show happen. “We are looking for people who want to have fun, who have bright personalities, and can give the game show some pizzazz. We want as much variety and participation as we can get,” Gregersen continued.

As for the first of the quiz shows, Gregersen recruited two of his co-workers: teen librarian Jennifer Beiermann and Tanisha Sampson who works in circulation. Sampson said she has always had a fascination for cemeteries, but confesses she’s not up on Warwick historic cemeteries. She’s going to do some research before facing off with her co-worker.

A noteworthy aspect of the show is that no matter comes up with the most correct answers both are guaranteed to win a prize. Theses prizes will be gift certificates to different Warwick businesses, which follows along with the quiz show’s vision of promoting pride in Warwick.

“The podcast is a place to learn about things that are happening and what this city is all about,” Gregersen said with enthusiasm. Listeners can tune in to the podcast on Spotify, where episodes are released once or twice a week. Described on Spotify as “a podcast for the City of Warwick with news and stories about the city’s people, businesses, and one-of-a-kind culture,” this is something you don’t want to miss out on.

And what’s the trick question on Wickes? It’s a gruesome ending for one of Warwick’s first settlers. Listen in, as Pegee Malcolm is sure to explain.
