Let’s build new high schools

Posted

To the Editor,

Once again our city faces some huge decisions. In my humble opinion, it is time to build two new high schools. Pilgrim High School is now 61 years old and in poor condition. The building itself needs so much work that it is not worth fixing and it is not fair to have its future students try to learn in such an environment. Having been a teacher and coach in Warwick for many years, I can honestly say that Pilgrim has some of the worst athletic fields in the state. Someday, take a ride and see the beautiful facilities in Cranston, East Providence, Central Falls, North Providence, Johnston, and many more.

Toll Gate High School is 50 years old. Although in better condition, it also has seen better days. Since it was built, athletes have had to travel to practice and play games. When I coached baseball and football there in the 1970s, baseball players drove their cars to practice each day at City Park. Football games were held at Vets or Pilgrim. It is the same today. The girls’ and boys’ soccer teams play at Bend Street and Vets. It is a disgrace that the same situation exists.

Education has changed greatly since I retired in 1994. Schools must be brought up to date with new technology, classrooms, codes, etc. Now is the time to attack these problems which are absolutely necessary for our future students. At this time, the state of RI is offering to help pay for new schools. Barrington Middle School and East Providence High School are such examples.  I believe building these new schools will elevate people’s impression of Warwick and make all of us proud. Let us take advantage of this “once in a lifetime” deal. If not now, when?
